Mechanics 3
MECH H2007

Description
This subject equips the student with a fundamental understanding of mechanics of machines. It will provide the student with analytical and practical skills for the solution of problems in this area.

Angular Motion: Angular displacement, velocity and acceleration, the radian and the equations of motion. Torque, Moment of Inertia, Radius of Gyration, flywheels. Centrifugal and centripetal forces.

Work, Power & Energy: Work, Power and Energy in linear systems, and rotational systems. Spring energy.

Momentum: Linear momentum, Principle of conservation of momentum. Linear problems.

Relative Velocity: Relative velocity problems.

Simple Machines: Mechanical Advantage & Velocity Ratio, Efficiency. Graphing load vs effort. The law of the machine. Power transmitted.

Gears: Introduction to simple spur gear; calculating speed ratios, torques and power transmitted. Effect of efficiency on torque. Gear design, geometry of gear teeth, Description of different types of gears and their applications: spur, helical, bevel, worm and epicyclic gears. Effects of gears on inertia.

Clutches: Analysis of Friction Plate clutches, using both Uniform wear and Uniform pressure theory. Description of friction plate, cone, centrifugal and fluid coupling clutches.

Belt Drives: Descriptions of flat, toothed and v-belts and their applications. Solving problems involving tensions, torque and the power transmitted with both flat and v-belts.
