This module is designed to give a learner the necessary knowledge and skills to design, specify or implement instrumentation measurement systems. It provides knowledge of PC data acquisition and competence in selection and use of transducers. In Addition it provides an introductory fundamental knowledge of control systems and analysis.
Measurement Circuits: Operational amplifier, inverting, non-inverting, common mode rejection ratio, comparator / summing circuits etc., data sheet specifications, instrumentation amplifiers, comparators. Noise considerations in measurement. Application of their use.
Electronic Measurement & Transducers: Transducers, principle of operation of light, temperature, force and displacement transducers. Flow and level measurements. pressure measurements and pressure transducers. Optical sensors and systems. Signals and noise in measurement systems. Principles of MEMS (Micro Electrical Mechanical Systems) devices. Use of LabView software to control and collate laboratory measurements. I2C and SPI communication to sensors. LDR calibration techniques.
Industrial Control Sensors: Use of commonly used sensors in process control - e.g. Proximity, capacitance, through beam, ultra sonic, limit switches, photoelectric, fiber optic. Relay switch configurations.
ADC/DAC: ADC & DAC design - Flash, Ramp, Single slope, Dual slope, Successive approximation ADC. R2R, weighted resistor sum. Practical considerations in their use. Noise consideration in their application.
