Circuit Theory
EENG H1015

Description
The aim of this module is to introduce the learner to basic electrical measurements and the basics of electronic circuit theory.

Basic Electrical Quantities and Instrumentation: Introduction to DC electrical measurements, DC current and Voltage. The ammeter, voltmeter and multi-meter, their use as measurement tools. The resistor in a DC circuit and Ohm's Law. Resistivity and temperature coefficient of resistance.

DC Circuit Theory: Resistive circuits. Resistors in series/parallel. The Wheatstone Bridge. Voltage and current divider rules. Power and energy in a resistive circuit. Maximum power transferred to a load resistor. Negative voltages and currents.

Network Theorems: Kirchoff's Voltage and Current Laws. The Superposition Theorem, Thevenin's Theorem for simplifying DC analysis. Loop Current Analysis and multi-source circuits.

Other Passive Devices in DC circuits: The Capacitor and Inductor in a DC network. Charging and discharging curves for the capacitor and inductor in a DC circuit.
