The aim of this module is to introduce the learner to basic electrical measurements and the basics of electronic circuit theory.
Basic Electrical Quantities and Instrumentation: Introduction to DC electrical measurements, DC current and Voltage. The ammeter, voltmeter and multi-meter, their use as measurement tools. The resistor in a DC circuit and Ohm's Law. Resistivity and temperature coefficient of resistance.
DC Circuit Theory: Resistive circuits. Resistors in series/parallel. The Wheatstone Bridge. Voltage and current divider rules. Power and energy in a resistive circuit. Maximum power transferred to a load resistor. Negative voltages and currents.
Network Theorems: Kirchoff's Voltage and Current Laws. The Superposition Theorem, Thevenin's Theorem for simplifying DC analysis. Loop Current Analysis and multi-source circuits.
Other Passive Devices in DC circuits: The Capacitor and Inductor in a DC network. Charging and discharging curves for the capacitor and inductor in a DC circuit.
