Course Program

Part 1: DC/DC Converters

1. Converters with Hard-Switched Devices:
  • Review of the main concepts of non-isolated DC/DC converters: Buck, Boost, Buck-Boost, Ćuk, SEPIC.
  • Isolated Converters: Flyback, Forward, Push-Pull, Half-Bridge, and Full-Bridge.

Concerning these converters the following topics will be covered:
  • Analysis of operation in discontinuous (DCM) and continuous (CCM) current modes;
  • Calculation of Transfer functions for steady-state operation in CCM;
  • Calculation of Ripple factors for output voltage and inductor current;
  • Design criteria for active components (switches) and passive components (diodes, transformers, inductors, and filter capacitors).

2. DC/DC Converters with Resonant Switching:
  • Classification of resonant converters;
  • Quasi-resonant or resonant-switch converters: Phase-shifted full bridge;
  • Resonant-load converters: Series-loaded and parallel-loaded converters; 
  • Multi-resonant converters: LLC and LCC.

Concerning these converters the following topics will be covered:

  • Analysis of Operation in discontinuous and continuous current modes;
  • Criteria for the design of active and passive components.

PART 2: Power Semiconductor Devices

  1. Introduction to Semiconductors used in power devices:
    • Silicon (Si), Silicon Carbide (SiC), Gallium Nitride (GaN).
  2. Power Diodes:
    • PN-junction and Schottky diodes: Static and dynamic characteristics.
  3. Power MOSFETs:
    • Structure and operating principle.
    • Turn-on and turn-off transients with inductive loads.
    • Behavior under short-circuit conditions.
  4. IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors):
    • Structure and operating principle.
    • Static and dynamic characteristics.
  5. HEMTs (High Electron Mobility Transistors):
    • Structure and operating principle.
    • Static and dynamic characteristics.
