The course aims to provide students tools for the study of demographic events and the knowledge of the basic demographic techniques for a first approach to the analysis of the main socio-demographic phenomena.

- The "social indexes": some concepts and categories. Empirical representation of the "demographic transition";
- The Italian demographic situation: low birth level and ageing of the population;
- Structure and demographic ageing: main definitions and indexes;
- 'Standardization' of mortality quotients;
- The lexis diagram;
- The 'mortality table': analytic and synthetic indexes;
- The concept of 'fertility' and its measures;
- The 'Cohort-components' equations and the demographic forecasts.
