Building Fabric Load Assessment
BLTT 3200

Description
To provide an understanding of the relationship between the thermal characteristics of a building and the interaction of the building services installations with the structure to provide a comfortable internal environment while minimising energy consumption and increasing sustainability.

Thermal response of buildings: factors affecting thermal response, diurnal variation in outdoor weather and internal gains, the effects of thermal inertia on the estimation of plant size, the effects on thermal comfort, methods of analysis, improving building thermal performance.

Solar radiation: atmospheric processes, geometry of solar radiation, contributions to radiation intensity, irradiation of exposed surfaces, radiation and windows, effects of shading.

Heating load estimation based on the steady-state model: Underlying assumptions and limitations, the influence of heat emitter type, the thermal response of the building and boiler ratio.

Cooling load estimation (the CIBSE Admittance Method): the energy flow paths, establishing time of peak load for peak temperature and plant sizing, calculation of peal internal environmental temperature, establishing building occupancy, processes and equipment energy profiles, estimating the contributions to the cooling load.
