Business and Management

Description
This module introduces the learner to a range of management accounting procedures applicable to manufacturing, and develops the learners’ management, business, and finance knowledge, along with their communication and research skills. The module covers management theory and practice as applicable to a range of manufacturing and service industries. The theory and case studies presented in the lectures, tutorials, and discussions is supported by the learners being required to complete two research assignments, one of which is a group assignment, and present their findings to their peers. This module aims to develop in the learner an understanding of the role and nature of management in a manufacturing organisation and enable the learner to acquire knowledge of organisational decision making processes. It develops self- management and team-working skills, and enables the learner to consider more than the technical perspective when evaluating an engineering product or process.

Management Theory: 
Functions and principles of management, classical management theory, current management theory and practice, management science, integrating different perspectives on management, challenges facing management today, and business ethics.
Managing Manufacturing and Service Industries:
Large multinationals manufacturing in Ireland, indigenous industries manufacturing for export, Irish companies operating in the local service sector, small to medium companies, managing change.
Organisations Structure and Design: Organisation and structure, internal and external business environment, organisation company cultures, organisational behaviour, organisations as systems
Management Accounting: Discounted cash flow, cost of capital, factoring in inflation, cash flow statement, activity based cost accounting, product costing, management accounting in manufacturing, accounting implications of JIT, AMT.
Manufacturing Control: Quality control, just in time, lean manufacturing, advanced manufacturing technology, project control, production planning and control, budget control, risk analysis.
Business Plans and Sources of Finance: Purpose, essential parts, marketing, product information, short term and long term business strategy, operations, capital requirements, costing, expected margins, financial accounts. Finance: Short-term - accrued expenses, deferred taxation, overdraft, factoring, Medium-term - leasing, hire-purchase, term Loans, Long-term - owner capital, retained profits, commercial loans, government grants, sale and leaseback, venture capital.
Business Communication: Business reports, types structure, format, executive summaries, commercial correspondence, business letters conventions, layout, conciseness and clarity, job applications, interview and c.v. preparations, public presentation guidelines, organising and chairing successful business meetings, brain storming techniques, meeting skills.
