Prototyping & Model Making 2
RPDV 3411

Description
This subject introduces the student to various forms of prototyping. It illustrates the importance of prototypes at the design stage while demonstrating the types and uses of prototypes. Emphasis will be on the production and analysis of prototypes. The aim of this module is to give the student an understanding of the relationship between virtual modelling and the various methods employed in the design and manufacture of prototypes.

3D Modelling
  • Design and virtually build parts to allow for the minimum material usage  and rapid iteration using prototyping techniques

Reverse Engineering
  • Use data produced by Reverse Engineering into 3D models for analysis or prototyping
  • Operate reverse engineering tools.

Additive Manufacturing
  • 3D Printing Methods; Stereolithography, Fused Deposition Modelling, Selective Laser Sintering, Laminated Object Manufacturing
  • Materials: Solids, Liquid and Powder
  • Slicing software

Vacuum & Silicone Moulding
  • Machine operation
  • Materials
  • Silicone mould design
  • Casting Parts

Thermoforming
  • Machine operation
  • Patterns
  • Vacuum holes
  • Part design

Laser Cutting
  • Create templates and produce parts on the laser cutting machine
