This module introduces the student to aspects of product design that enable them to understand design in the context of innovation, and the innovation process. Students work with external clients to develop a solution to a brief. The module also develops the area of Human Factors as a critical context for the design of consumer products. The aim of this module is to provide the student with the tools and knowledge to apply innovative and creative thinking to solving human centred 3-dimensional design problems. It also aims to explore how the innovation process is applied to the development of products.

Concept Generation and communication: Creativity and innovation techniques for 3-dimensional design.
Ergonomics/Human Factors: The importance of human factors in the development of human centred product solutions
Manufacturing and Materials: The importance of innovation in relation to both manufacturing and materials technologies
Design Communications: The importance of communication for design. Tools, technology and methods for communicating 3-dimensional design
Portfolio Preparation: Practical applications of basic visual communication techniques with regard to 2D presentation for pdf portfolio preparation; focusing on use of space, imagery, annotation and conveying skills pertaining to creativity.
