The module introduces the learner to a range of topics including Matrix Algebra, Curve Fitting, Differential Calculus and Integral Calculus. The aim of the module is to teach the basic concepts of these topics before applying the mathematical ideas of each to a range of Product Design Engineering problems. The application of these mathematical ideas to Product Design Engineering problems is facilitated by two assignments, specifically aimed at supporting other course modules.
MC1 Curve Fitting: Cubic Spline Interpolation, Bezier Curves.
MC2 Differential Calculus and Applications: Differentiation from First Principles, Basic Rules of Differentiation, Implicit Differentiation, Partial Differentiation, Rates of Change, Second Derivatives, Sketching Curves.
MC3 Integral Calculus and Applications: Basic Rules of Integration, Area under a Curve, Volumes of Revolution, Moment of Inertia.
MC4 Matrix Algebra: Basic rules of Matrix Algebra, Inverse Matrix Method, Gaussian Elimination.
