This module introduces the student to the fundamental mathematical concepts and methods required to support other modules in the Product Design course. The module builds on previous mathematical knowledge gained and is mainly concerned with Algebra, Trigonometry, Vector Algebra, Graphical Techniques and Statistical Methods. The aim of the module is to teach the basic concepts of these topics before applying the mathematical ideas of each to a range of Product Design Engineering problems. The application of these mathematical ideas to Product Design Engineering problems is facilitated by two assignments, specifically aimed at supporting other course modules.
MC1 Algebra Laws of Indices, Rules of Logarithms, Imperial to Metric Conversion.
MC2 Trigonometry and Geometry Basic Rules of Trigonometry, Radian Measure, Sectors and Segments, Volumes and Surface Areas, Rates of Flow.
MC3 Vectors Vector Algebra, Components of a Vector, Polar and Rectangular Form, Resultant of Forces.
MC4 Graphical Methods: Linear Equations, Logarithmic and Exponential Curves, Trigonometric Functions, Parametric Curves, Linearising Graphs.
MC5 Statistics: Basic Probability, Mean and Standard Deviation, Normal Distribution, Linear Regression.
