This module is intended as a first course in heat transfer for undergraduate honours mechanical engineering students. The structure of the module follows a widely accepted structure in heat transfer appropriate to this level and enables the completion of a significant quantity of the recommended class texts. A distinctive feature of this module is its emphasis on the physical aspects of the subject matter in addition to mathematical representations and manipulations. A systematic procedure characterised by a prescribed format is employed for problem-solving.
- Basic modes of HT;
- Conductive HT: Introduction to conduction, General diffusion equation, One-dimensional steady-state conduction, Thermal resistance network, HT from extended surfaces, Two-dimensional steady-state conduction, Transient conduction, Numerical methods (Finite difference)
- Convective HT: Physics of convective HT; Forced convective HT: external flow and internal flow; Natural/free convective HT;
- Thermal radiation: Processes and properties; Radiation exchange between surfaces;
- Heat exchangers: design & analysis;
- Multi-mode HT
