Electromechanical Engineering
MECH 2016

Description
This module is intended to be a second stage course in electrical engineering for students of Mechanical, Manufacturing or Building Services Engineering. The module builds upon previous knowledge of fundamental circuit theory to focus on industry relevant applications. The course features a thorough treatment of single phase AC circuits and an introduction to three phase. It cover the fundamental principles of electromechanical energy conversion and energy storage. It provides an overview of electric motor design and application.

  1. Review of Circuit Theory
  2. Analysis of constant frequency alternating circuits using phasors and complex numbers
  3. Introduction to Three phase: Line and Phase voltages, Star and Delta connections, Balanced and unbalanced circuits.
  4. Active, Reactive, Apparent Power and power factor in single phase and three phase circuits.
  5. Transformers: Single Phase isolation transformers, Three phase delta-star transformers.
  6. Principles of Electromechanical energy conversion power, energy, efficiency and storage.
  7. Introduction to electric motors including DC motors, Induction motors, PM Synchronous motors and stepper motors
