AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: The aim of the chemistry course is to gain students fundamental and applied knowledge of the basic chemical processes and laws, the structure and the properties of the substances and their transformations, as well as the basic chemical technologies applied in engineering. This knowledge is the base for the subsequent specialized courses. Upon competition of the course the students will be able to solve different tasks related to the quality and reliability of the materials and should be able to select correctly the materials and technologies in terms of chemical resistance of their applications.
DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: The main topics concern: Modern concepts about the structure of the atom and the nature of the chemical bonds and their influence on the structure and the properties of substances; Basic concepts in electrochemistry, such as electrolytic dissociation, electrical conductivity of solutions, chemical power sources, corrosion of metals and methods for corrosion protection; High molecular compounds and chemical properties of organic and inorganic polymers.
