Description
Objectives 
This course aims at supplying the students with the basic principle of science and technology of polymeric and ceramic materials. At the end of the course the students will know the main properties of these important class of materials, the way they are manufactures and how to use them. 

Course program 
SYLLABUS Main principle of organic chemistry: carbon atom, hydrocarbons and their molecular geometry, main organic compounds, isomericism. Polymerization by addition and by condensation, repeat unit, number-average and weight average molecular weight . Main kinds of polymers. Configuration and conformation of polymers: linear, branched, crosslinked, network polymers. Copolymerization. Crystallinity of polymers, degree of crystallinity and factors affecting it, unit cell, heating and cooling curves, glass transition temperature. Mechanic behavior of polymers: brittle, ductile and elastomeric, stress-strain curves and their dependence on temperature, deformation of polymers under stress, vulcanization of rubber. Thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers. Manufacture of polymers. Crystal structures: Bravais lattices, metals structure, ceramic structures. X-Ray diffraction. Imperfections in crystalline solids. Mass transport in crystalline materials: diffusion, laws of diffusion. Ceramic materials: traditional and advanced ceramics. Mechanicalproperties of the ceramic materials: brittle fracture, stress concentration, fracture toughness. Electrical properties of ceramics: ionic conductivity; application of ionic conductors.Processing of traditional and advanced ceramics: sintering of ceramics
