ENGINEERING GEOLOGY
93377

Description
 Objectives
The course is delivered through classroom lessons, both theoretical and practical, and, eventually, technical field trips. The main objective of this course is to provide notions of engineering geology required in the field of civil and environmental engineering. The course develops through the acquisition of basic geological notions and their application to engineering works. Theoretical lessons will focus first on basic geology, and then methodological lessons about engineering geology applications will follow. These tools will help the student collect geological and hydrogeological data to define a conceptual engineering geological model. Such a model will be the starting point to analyse and discuss problematics derived from engineering works and their impact on its surroundings. At the end of the course, the student will be able to analyse geological issues linked to engineering problematics.

Course program
SYLLABUS Summary of basic geological notions; Fundamentals of Volcanology and Seismology; Geological maps; Relationship between Geology and Engineering; Hydrogeology; Methods in geological investigation; Landslides: classifications, descriptions and inventories; example case studies from Italy; Geo-hydrological hazard, vulnerability, exposure and risk.
