Hydraulic Structures 1
CBEH 4005

Description
The module entails instructing the student in some of the advanced principles within civil engineering hydraulics. The module is delivered so that the student builds on the basic concepts introduced within the first civil engineering hydraulic module delivered in year 3. The students demonstrate competence through project assessment, continuous assessments, quizzes and exam performance. The aim of this module is to enable the student to acquire the necessary knowledge to design and evaluate hydraulic structures and to apply core technology to the solution of well-defined problems in water engineering.

Indicative Syllabus
Elements of Dam Engineering: Dam classification, dam types and characteristics, introduction to spillways, outlets and ancillary structures, site assessment and selection of dam type.
Embankment Dams: Embankment types and key elements, embankment defect mechanisms and failure modes, design features and practice.
Concrete Dams: Loading analysis, stability analysis, rotation and overturning, translation and sliding, overstress and material failure, stabilizing and heightening of dams, construction planning and materials.
Dam Outlet Works: Design flood, flood routing, freeboard, sedimentation in reservoirs, cavitations, spillway types, characterization and design, and bottom outlet works.
Energy Dissipation: Energy dissipation on the spillway surface, ski-jump spillways, hydraulic jump stilling basin, different types of stilling basin and plunge pools.
