Advanced Highways and Transportation
CBEH 4007

Description
 The module introduces the student to a number of basic areas of practice for a transportation engineer, road safety auditing, traffic and transportation impact assessment, mobility management plans and noise assessment. Students who complete this module will be able to carry out a road safety audit, prepare a mobility management plant, carry out a 4 stage traffic impact assessment and carry out a road noise assessment.

 Indicative Syllabus
 Demand Modelling: Trip generation, trip distribution, modal split and traffic assignment. Multi-modal transport models in urban areas. 
Road Safety Auditing: UK and Irish standards and guidance. Role of road safety team members and leader. Awareness of those affected by audit procedure. Identification and evaluation of road safety issues for a range of scenarios. Workshop exercises.
Traffic and Transport Impact Assessment: Scoping / need for assessment. Analysis of existing development and traffic conditions. Estimation of traffic impact of proposal on existing network. Parking issues. Analysis of public transport provision and provision of non-motorised transport. Workshop exercises. Page 222 of 241 
Mobility management Plans: DTO Advice Note on the content of mobility management plans for proposed developments. Workshop exercises. Road safety engineering: Designing improvements to highway design layouts, surfacing schemes and traffic control systems. Accident research in Ireland and the UK. Road safety analysis and planning. Accident reduction programmes. Interaction with road safety auditing. Workshop studies 
Road Noise Assessment: noise impact theory and practice, NRA noise assessment guidelines, EU Standards on Noise Mapping.
