Highway Engineering I
CIV_227

Description
The course aims to learn the methodology for geometrical road design with emphasis on safety. Also the importance of visibility in design to ensure safety. Furthermore, the learning of methodologies for calculating the volume of excavations.

Upon successful completion of the course students are expected to be able to:

• Know the highway's parts , codes and applicable design guidelines.

• To draw a new highway on a topographical plan
• Propose alternative highway markings based on the cost of earthworks/excavations and other necessary construction

Syllabus: Introduction to Highway Construction and Transport. Basic Traffic Features. Vehicle Dynamics. Road safety criteria. Visibility testing. Elements of highway geometry: horizontal (spiral curves, inclinations, curves), longitudinal (along slopes and their joints), wide cross sections, earthworks/excavations.  Highway and environment.
