Fluid Mechanics 2

Description
To enable the student to develop the knowledge and analytical skills to solve practical problems in fluid mechanics, through applications to system design and performance studies.

Review of Fluid Mechanics 1: Fluid properties, Continuity, fluid statics, Bernoulli equation

Losses in pipes: Losses in pipes and ducts (round and rectangular), piping networks, valves, pumps, pump selection, pipe-work design and layout optimization, software solution.

Pumps: Basic energy considerations, basic angular motion, centrifugal pumps/fans, axial-flow and mixed flow pumps, turbines, compressors.

Open channel flow: Open channel flow, manning equation, Froude number, hydraulic jump

Fluid Statics: Review of previous statics, Forces on gates and curved surfaces, metacentric height, stability
