Recent developments in computing and data transmission as well as availability of services are shaping our lives in ways unimaginable a few years ago. While these developments have provided an unprecedented access to data and connectivity, they have also led to increased security concerns regarding the safety of computer systems, data and wellbeing.
This module provides an overview of the fundamental concepts of cryptography and cybersecurity. It will introduce students to the basic principles of cryptographic algorithms and network and operating systems cyber security. Emphasis will be placed on understanding issues which will lead to the use of encryption and detecting weaknesses and vulnerabilities in computer systems. Relevant concepts covered in the module will be experimented by students in the labs.
The aims of this module are :-
• introduction to the principles of cryptography and cryptanalysis,
• give a thorough understanding of vulnerabilities and penetration testing,
• provide a sound practical knowledge of security tools, operating systems and network security,
• provide an in-depth practical penetration testing knowledge in real-life.
