Step-by-step teaching of the theoretical principles and practical application of the methodology of life cycle assessment according to ISO 14040/44 in order to record and evaluate the potential environmental impacts of products, technologies and services over the entire life cycle (production, use, disposal).
This includes
- Determination of the objective and scope of the study as well as the functional unit in accordance with the respective issue
- Carrying out a life cycle inventory, i.e. balancing the incoming and outgoing material flows of the system under investigation.
- Carrying out the impact assessment, i.e. assigning the material flows to environmental impact categories and quantifying possible environmental impacts.
- Evaluation and interpretation of the results as well as their preparation into a comprehensible presentation for the respective addressee.
- Differentiation of the method from other methods of (environmental) assessment
Since the data basis in particular has a significant influence on the results, the topic of scientific work (including data research, plausibility checks) is of major importance. In addition to the examination of existing LCAs, an introduction to the software-based implementation of LCAs is given.
