This module will require students to undertake a group based design study focused on a medical or assistive device. Each group will be assigned a specific design task. Each group will produce a report and presentation for their assigned device.
- Project Scope: Complete a scope document for the project. The scope document will include a definition of the project objectives. A needs analysis for the device and addressing the context of why that need exists. A functional analysis of the solution/device.
- Project Planning/Management: Formulate, implement and review a plan of action. Work consistently to plan, modifying, and adapting where necessary and completing to deadline. Record activities in a log book.
- Literature survey: Identify the areas that will have to be researched. Conduct research of these areas showing appreciation of the source "reliability" Complete a stand alone document that covers all related aspects of the project.
- Complete a manufacturing plan: Complete material requisition forms where necessary. Manage the manufacturing process to complete a prototype of the final design.
- Formulate a written technical report: The final report will include the scope document, the literature review and the specification document. The range of concepts proposed including sketches, the selection process for the concepts ( Pugh Matrix) , the detailed design and justification for any decisions made. The report will also contain a manufacturing plan, outlining the processes used. It will also include a testing plan and an assessment of performance judged against the design specification. The report conclusion will include an assessment of the success of the project and any improvements.
- Oral Presentation: Present to internal and external examiners, prepare and present a poster.
- Complete a reflective essay covering all aspects of the project, including technical issues and group dynamics. The weighting of this essay is significant. The student will have to demonstrate that they have reflected on all stages of the project and have thought about how they can improve their performance in future projects.
