The principle aims of this module are to develop the student’s knowledge of Human Anatomy and the functioning of the musculoskeletal system; to examine the structure and function of the principle human anatomical joints and organs.
Introduction to the Human Body: Levels of Structural Organisation; Body structure function and support; Bodily Fluids.
Body Tissues: Epithelial Tissue; Connective Tissue; Muscle Structure and function; Bone Structure.
The Skeletal System: Structure and function of the Skeletal System; The Axial Skeleton (The Skull, Thoracic Cage; Respiratory Tract); The Abdomen and Pelvis (including the pelvic girdle); The Appendicular Skeleton ( The Upper Limbs, The Pectoral Girdles, The Lower Limbs).
The Musculo-Skeletal System: Mechanical functioning of muscle and connective tissue; Movement of the joints; The Muscles role in movement of the skeletal system.
Study of joints commonly requiring replacement: Examination of the structure and function of common joints needing surgical intervention e.g. knee joint, hip joint
Laboratory work: Examination of key aspects of human anatomy in laboratory experiments
