Introduction to Electronic Communications

Description
This module introduces the learner to the fundamental principles of electronic communications.

Analogue signals: Periodic and aperiodic signals, time and frequency domain representation, Fourier analysis and synthesis of simple waveforms. Concept of bandwidth

Basic principles of filters: Low pass filters, high pass filters and band pass filters, passive filter circuits

Fundamentals of Analogue Modulation: AM modulation and envelope detection, sidebands, Frequency modulation, Comparison of AM and FM

Digital signals: Analogue to digital conversion, bit rate, symbol rate, comparison of digital and analogue signals

Transmission techniques and impairments: Types of transmission, Synchronous and Asynchronous communications. Attenuation, noise and distortion during transmission, multiplexing

Transmission media: Types of transmission media, transmission lines and their characteristics, termination of transmission lines
