Bio-energy Systems

Description
The aim of this module is to introduce the student to the importance of biological processes in the energy field. This course will take an applied look at a number of important processes that will be important in ensuring Irelands Energy Security into the future.

Fermentation: Potential for Fermentation in Ireland; Microbial Physiology; Bioprocessing(Feedstock for Fermentation, Media, Systems, Downstream Processing, Regulation and safety); Scale Process Evaluation (Laboratory work)Scale-up Issues; Examination of the Literature.

Anaerobic Digestion: Potential for anaerobic digestion in Ireland; Microbial Physiology; Bio-processing(Feedstock for Anaerobic Digestion, Media, Systems, Downstream Processing, Regulation and safety); Scale Process Evaluation(Laboratory work); Scale-up issues; Examination of the literature.

Biodiesel (Transesterification): Feedstock for Biodiesel production, Vegetable Oil and Algae Oil; Scale Process Evaluation.

Biomass: The Biomass market in Ireland; Efficient utilisation of Biomass as a source of energy – Gasification.

Data acquisition and analysis concepts: The use of electronic systems for data acquisition. Appropriate techniques for the analysis of data and large datasets.
