Refrigeration and HVAC
HVAC H3001

Description
This module aims to familiarize with the student with ventilation, refrigeration and air-conditioning processes and systems. In addition they will apply their knowledge to the analysis of selected industrial and commercial applications.

Comfort and the indoor environment: A descriptive approach to the factors that influence comfort in an internal environment. Calculation of some basic parameters such as resultant temperature, mean radiant temperature. Ashrea 555 and other relevant comfort standards

An introduction to ventilation systems: An introduction to ventilation systems and system components. Theory of air flow in ducts and its application to the selection and sizing of ductwork elements. Fan selection and sizing

Air conditioning systems: Descriptions of common all-air systems including constant volume, re-circulating systems, VAV, dual duct and reheat systems.

Air conditioning theory and processes: The thermodynamic theory of air/water mixtures. Air conditioning processes, psychrometric charts. Plotting of typical air-conditioning process on the chart. Load calculations for selected scenarios.

Refrigeration: The simple direct expansion system, the cycle on the P-h chart, load calculations and coefficient of performance. Refrigerants, properties and applications. Typical domestic, commercial and industrial refrigeration applications including multi-stage and cascade type systems. Absorption refrigeration systems
