Description
This module aims to provide the student with the knowledge and skills to carry out an elementary analysis of the performance of large scale thermo-electric power generation plant as used by utilities, industry and large commercial applications.

Electricity generating plant: The big picture. Types of generating plant with a review of the roles, advantages and disadvantages of each type of system.

Traditional Rankine cycle steam plant: An introduction to a simple ideal steam power cycle and its elements. The application of 1st Law principles to the analysis of the cycle. Factors that influence performance and how performance is improved

Gas turbine plant: A introduction to open-cycle gas turbine plant and its elements. The application of 1st Law principles to the analysis of the basic ideal cycle. Factors that influence performance and how performance is improved.

Combined heat and power plant: Types of system and associated performance calculations from large district heating to micro- generation A case study of a proposed scheme with a basic analysis for viability

Nuclear power plant: A review of the types of systems and their operation and that of each element of the plant. Safety features and a history of major accidents in the nuclear industry
