Electrical Machines
ELMH H2002

Description
This module aims to familiarise the student with the operating characteristics of common electrical components and devices. The student will be able to analyse the performance of, and select and specify a range of motors, generators, drives and associated equipment.

Transformers: Magnetism and magnetic circuits. Faradays Law. Transformer principles. Magnetising current, iron and copper losses. Leakage reactance. Equivalent circuit. Phasor diagrams of unloaded and loaded transformers.

DC Machines: Faradays Law. Flemings left and right hand rule. Lenz's Law. Construction and operation of DC machines. Generating and motoring modes of operation. Series, shunt and compound configurations. Lap and wave windings. Equation for generated emf. Torque, speed, current and efficiency analysis.

AC Motors: Construction and operation of three-phase and single phase induction motors. Cage rotor and wound rotors. Rotating magnetic fields. Synchronous speed, slip and rotor speed. Torque, speed, current and efficiency analysis. Torque/speed characteristic curve. Equivalent circuit.

AC Electrical Generators: Construction and operation of synchronous machines. Generating and motoring modes of operation. Salient pole and cylindrical rotor types. Output voltage and frequency. Equivalent circuit of synchronous machine. Operation of induction generators.

Variable Speed Drives: Construction and operation. Applications for energy reduction.
