Description
Course Program

  • Notes on the plastic deformation of a crystalline structure and on tensile-compression-torsion tests for the mechanical characterization of metallic materials.
  • Theory of plasticity: continuum mechanics, yield criteria, specialization of  equations in the plastic field.
  • Methods for the solution of plastic deformation problems in metals.
  • The Finite Element Method (FEM).
  • Classification of plastic deformation processes.
  • Sheet metal forming processes: blanking, bending, deep drawing, non-conventional processes. For each process, there is going to be a review illustrating: a general description of the process, its main applications, stress and strain state, and forces necessary to perform the process.
  • Notes on bulk plastic deformation processes: forging, rolling, drawing, extrusion. For each process, a general description of the process will be provided, and the following will be examined: stress and strain state, forces and work necessary to perform the process, tools and materials, process defects.
  • Content of the exercises: the course includes numerical exercises supporting the topics developed in class and the use of software dedicated to the design of forming processes.
