Electrotechnology (Product Design)
ELCT 2411

Description
The aim of this module is to give the student: Knowledge of safe practice in carrying out tasks related to electricity in the context of product design. Understanding of the basic electrical principles and knowledge of the operation and construction for common electrical components and systems. Knowledge of the use of circuit simulation software for design. The student will be introduced to the use of micro-controllers and basic development environments, hardware and software, in the realisation of electronic products.

1: Applications of Ohms Law and Kirchoff’s Laws
2: Calculation of resistance in series and parallel, and DC power consumption
3: Practical use of multimeters, AC and DC variable power supplies
4: Building and testing resistive circuits, and RC charging circuits
5: Capacitors, series and parallel, diodes, LED’s
6: Building and testing of rectification circuit
7: DC and AC generation, DC and AC motors, Stepper motors
8: Transformers: Construction, principle of operation, applications, calculations, mobile power sources
9: Designing with Circuit Simulation software
