Design Tools & Technology
DGTT 2411

Description
This subject introduces students to practical and systematic design procedures and to use these procedures to solve design problems. The aim of this module is to give students an understanding of the role of analysis such as stress, bending and torsion within the Design Process. Select and size of standard and non-standard engineering components under a variety of operating conditions. Appreciate the use of Spreadsheets in the development and completion of designs.

Basic Stresses
  • Shear, Tensile and compressive stresses
  • Factors of Safety

Standard Parts
  • Describe the types of key; calculate key lengths and cross sections using charts and material stresses.
  • Calculate shaft diameters using bending and torsion stresses
  • Describe the types of couplings and their uses. Calculate bolt numbers for couplings
  • Create spreadsheets to automate these calculations.

Power Transmission systems
  • Compare Chain drives, Belt drive and gearing.
  • Describe gear particulars, Addendum, Dedendum, PCD, Pressure Angle, Circular Pitch etc.
  • Selecting gear ratios, gear modules and types of gears
  • Use the Lewis Equation to calculate face widths under a number of operating conditions.
  • Create spreadsheets to automate these calculations.

Bearings/ Seals
  • Describe both static and dynamic bearings. Using catalogues select appropriate bearings for particular applications. Explain the need for sealing and lubrication. Select from catalogues appropriate seals.

Design Function and Concept Selection
  • Explain the need for design specifications and evaluation.
  • Use tools such as function diagrams, primary/secondary needs analysis, design specification and evaluation tools to develop and select technical elements and components for designs.

Anthropometrics & Ergonomics
  • Describe and use of Human Factors design tools for the position and layout of control elements and design forms.
  • Make use of anthropometric charts for positioning and sizing design elements
