Prototyping & Model Making 1
MMRD 2411

Description
In this module, the student is introduced to the techniques used in model making and prototyping at all stages of the product design process. The importance of visualising the design at an early stage using 3D models will be illustrated. Techniques suitable for producing final stage prototypes will also be learnt. The aim of this module is to give the student an understanding of the relationship between the design process and the various methods employed in the design and manufacture of prototypes.

Construction in card, wood and plastics:
Methods of construction using a selection of cellulose and polymer sheet materials. Properties of these materials. Suitable glues, solvents and paint finishes. Working with templates and formers to achieve difficult shapes.

Production of simple forms from foam: Hot wire cutting of extruded and expanded foams such as styrofoam. Working with templates and formers to achieve difficult shapes. Production of simple forms from block polymer materials

Working with metals: Understanding how to measure and mark stock material. Basic workshop safety. Use of metal working machinery including but not limited to Lathes, Mills and Drills.

Clay modelling: Appropriate clays for modelmaking. When to use clay Paints for clay models.

Finishing and Painting: Preparing a model surface for paint, different types of paint and how to apply them. Understanding for gaining a good surface finish using fillers, primers and top coats.
