Description

Complex stress: Stresses on oblique planes, Material subjected to direct stress, Material subjected to pure shear, Material subjected to two mutually perpendicular direct stresses, Material subjected to combined direct and shear stresses, Principal plane inclination in terms of associated principal stress, Three dimensional stresses, thin cylinder, thin sphere, Principal strains in terms of stresses,  Principal stresses in terms of strains( 2-D stress system).

Principal Strain: Mohr’s strain circle, Construction of strain circle from three  known strains(McClintock Method)

Theories of elastic failure: Maximum  principal stress, Maximum shear stress, Maximum Principal strain.

Slope and deflection of beams: Relationship between loading, shear force, bending moment, slope and deflection. Direct integration method for slope and deflection. Macaulay’s method for slope and deflection. Castigliano’s theorem for deflection of bent cantilevers.

Struts: Buckling instability, Euler's theory for strut with pinned ends, Comparison of Euler's theory with experimental results, Rankine-Gordon Formula.

Springs: Closed and open coiled helical springs, leaf and carriage springs.

Shear stresses in beams: Shear Stress distribution due to bending in common engineering sections.
