Mechanics 4
MECH H3003

Description
This subject equips the student with detailed knowledge of theoretical, numerical and experimental techniques to analyse mechanical stress systems. This in turn will provide the students with the analytical ability and practical skills necessary in the workplace.

Beam Bending Stress: Includes asymmetrical beams and UDL's

Slope & Deflection: Relationship between bending moment, slope and deflection, Macaulay’s method, concentrated loads and uniformly distributed loads, Principle of superposition

Thin Cylinders: Hoop stress & Longitudinal stress; changes in dimensions. Vessels subjected to fluid pressure, effects of end plates.

Thick Cylinders: Lamé Theory. Longitudinal stress & max shear stress Internal pressure. Shrinkage / interference allowance. Compound cylinders.

Complex Stresses & Stress Transformations: Principal stresses & planes; max shear stress, 2D Mohr’s circle

Stress Concentrations and fatigue

Buckling of Columns: Euler buckling, pin ended columns, eccentric loading
