The understanding of mechanics and methods of calculations for typical load carrying structures will be developed. Mathematical problem solving of structures will be used to demonstrate the specifics of statically determinate and indeterminate structures. The classical methods of calculations (method of forces and method of displacements) will be explained for statically indeterminate structures. Basics of numerical methods- method of finite differences and finite element method will be covered in the course. Basic ideas of understanding of behavior of spatial structures, shear stiffness and center of stiffness of multi-story buildings will be covered. Design principles of rational topology of shear walls will be covered. The basic ideas of structural non-linear calculations that includes the non-linear geometrical effects and material non-linearity will be demonstrated. The design of load bearing structures by taking into account elastic-plastic deformations will be covered. The calculations will be done analytically and with software applications.
