Description
Objectives
The course main objective is to present to students fluid mechanics from fundamental principles to the solution of relatively complex fluid-flow problems and the understanding of environmental phenomena. Students successfully completing this course will be able to analyze the forces of static fluids on structures; to analyze and design pipe systems for the movement of fluids. Finally, the course will furnishes the knowledge of the basic principles of some important environmental fluid dynamic phenomena, such as fluid movement through saturated porous media and open channel flows.
Course program
1. Properties of Fluids 2. Pressure and Fluid Statics 3. Fluid Kinematics 4. Mass, Energy and Momentum conservation Equations 5. Orifices and Weirs 6. Dimensional Analysis and Flow Systems 7. Flow in Pipes 8. Free surface flow: uniform flow 9. Free surface flow: steady state flow 10. Elements of Differential Analysis of Fluid Flow 11. Flow Over Bodies: Drag and Lift 12. Compressible Flow 13: Transient flow in pipes
Books
Citrini & Noseda - Idraulica Cengel & Cimbala - Meccanica dei Fluidi - McGraw Hill Notes on specific topics
Evaluation mode
The exam consists of a written (selective) test and an oral examination. The written test consists of 2-3 numerical problems related to course topics and it is considered correctly passed in the case of the correct conduct of at least 2/3 of it. If you pass the written test you are admitted to take the oral examination. The oral exam can also be carried out on another date, during the same exam session. The oral exam consists of 3-4 (theroretical and applicative) questions related to course topics. The final mark is awarded based on the outcome of the oral exam but taking into account the written test.
