Module Overview
This module is concerned with the constraints imposed by time, resources, health and safety, and the law on construction engineering projects and it examines how the engineer can assess and manage these constraints. Building Information Modelling (BIM) represents the most modern of construction management techniques and represents a new level of multidisciplinary work practice. As such, it is essential that students are aware of how it is realised, through mandates, guidance and use of standards. By studying aspects of contract law in lectures and case-studies, students are made aware of the engineer's role as a professional offering services to a client in the construction industry and of the legal framework within which construction projects exist. The importance of health and safety in construction is emphasised by a study of the current legislation and an examination of case studies.
The aim of this module is to develop the student's awareness of the social, legal, and business context of engineering, and of operational practices in the construction industry.
