Civil Engineering Scheme
CBEH 4008

Description
This fourth year module develops initial design skills of a qualitative nature for the design process in the areas of structural, transportation, environmental/water/wastewater and geotechnical engineering. The role of the graduate/project engineer is simulated and examined in the context of current design practice in Ireland and worldwide. Transferable skills are developed through the use of storyboards, literature research/design projects and physical models, all of which also develop an understanding of the application of current design practices, statutory requirements and procedures.
The aim of this module is to build on the design concepts introduced earlier in the course, taking the design process to completion through the production of outline design calculations and engineering drawings.

It is envisaged that 4 design projects will be undertaken during the course. For each design exercise, students, working in groups, will address the following areas:
 · Review of design panel brief
 · Production of sketches / drawings
· Management of team effort
· Focused research into design solutions
· Informal tutorials with design specialists
 · Outline design calculations ·
Drawing production using CAD
 · Review with design panel
