Hydraulic Structures 2
CBEH 4006

Description
The module entails instructing the student in some of the advanced principles within civil engineering hydraulics. The module is delivered so that the students’ builds on the basic concepts introduced within Hydraulic Structures 1 module delivered in the first semester. The students demonstrate competence through project assessment, continuous assessments and exam performance. The aim of this module is to enable the student to acquire the necessary knowledge to design and evaluate hydraulic structures and to apply core technology to the solution of well defined problems in water engineering.

Content:
River Engineering:  Open channel flow, river morphology, sediment transport, flow measuring structures, river flood routing, river improvement works, flood relief structures.
Hydroelectric Power Power supply and demand, types of water power development, head classification of hydroelectric plants, stream-flow data, hydraulic turbines, surge tanks.
Coastal Engineering: Wave Theory Wave motion, wave forces, wave run-up, wave overtopping,  Breakwaters, sea outfalls, coastal zone management.
