THERMAL MACHINES
508104003

Description
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Know how to distinguish and understand the differences between the different classes of thermal machines. As well as to know the field of application of the different thermal engines.
2. Know the principle of operation and regulation of thermal turbomachines and calculate the efficiency of thermal machines and installations (thermal power plants) using technical thermodynamics as a basic tool for energy analysis.
3. Understand the operating principles of the different types of thermal power plants and analyse the basic and complex thermodynamic cycles of each type of thermal power plant.
4. Differentiate between non-conventional and conventional thermal power plants from the point of view of thermodynamic analysis. Identify and justify the use of the main elements of conventional thermal power plants and the thermal machines used.
5. Design a thermodynamic cycle of a thermal power plant for given boundary conditions optimising various parameters. Using computer tools for the thermodynamic analysis of thermal power plants. Plan and organise the work of the group. Understand the mechanisms for limiting the environmental impact of each type of thermal power plant.
6. Know the classification of reciprocating internal combustion engines (IC engines) and their fundamental parameters.
7. Evaluate the heat losses existing in an ICACM and the advantages and disadvantages of the different cooling systems. Know the lubrication needs in an AIACM and the characteristics of the oils used.
8. Understand the charge renewal process in 2T and 4T engines and how it affects engine performance. Justify, analyse and evaluate the use of supercharging, its advantages, disadvantages and future trends.
9. Understand the phenomena of mixture formation and combustion in both positive-ignition and compression-ignition engines. Know the pollutant effect that AITMs produce in the atmosphere and the ways to mitigate it.
